"Portrait of Doge Leonardo Loredan" by Giovanni Bellini

This incredibly life-like portrait of Leonardo Loredan, who served Venice as doge from 1501-1512, was painted in 1501. While appearing immediate and real, Loredan also seems distant and commanding, reflecting the dignity his office. Dressed in silk damask robes with gold and silver metal threads, the figure of Loredan comes to life through Bellini’s mastery of oil painting. Buona visione!
