Raphael’s portrait of his friend, Baldassare Castiglione, took the #1 spot in my “Top 10 Portraits of the Italian Renaissance” webinar! It was painted in 1514 and is one of only two portraits by Raphael painted on canvas. The richly (and warmly) dressed figure stands against a surprising neutral backdrop and engages the viewer with his striking blue eyes. Buona visione!
