"Portrait of a Young Woman", Botticelli
Located in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, Botticelli’s “Portrait of a Young Woman” was painted in the 1480s. The sitter’s head is in profile, while her bust twists towards the viewer to reveal the ancient cameo she wears around her neck depicting Apollo and Marsyas which was owned by Lorenzo il Magnifico de’ Medici. While some art historians believe that the woman is the celebrated Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci, the most beautiful woman in Renaissance Florence and habitual muse of Botticelli, others believe it simply represents an idealized young woman. Buona visione!
