"Madonna of Senigallia", Piero della Francesca, National Gallery of Le Marche, Urbino

Painted in 1474 by Piero della Francesca, the “Madonna of Senigallia” was originally located in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie just outside of the town of Senigallia in the Italian region of Le Marche. Today, it is located in the National Gallery of Le Marche which is in the Ducal Palace of Urbino. The beautiful painting clearly shows Piero’s amazing ability to control light and the influence of Flemish painting both in the use of the oil medium and in such details as the wicker basket in the background and fabric covering the Virgin Mary’s head. Buona visione!
