"Madonna della Scala" (“Madonna of the Stairs”), after Andrea del Sarto, Ringling Museum

This exquisite copy of Andrea del Sarto’s sublime “Madonna of the Stairs,” which is in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, is just one of the many masterpieces in the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Painted sometime after the original (1523), the painting takes its name from the staircase upon which the Madonna and child sit. Down below, arranged in a pyramidal composition reminiscent of Raphael, St. Matthew and an angel adore the holy couple. Buona visione!
