"Madonna del Voto", Dietisalvi di Speme, 1267, Siena Cathedral
Painted in 1267 in tempera and gold by a relatively unknown artist named Dietisalvi di Speme, the “Madonna del Voto” (“Madonna of the Vow”) is in Siena Cathedral. It is a Byzantine-style Madonna and Child image to which the people of Siena are particularly devoted and to which they ascribe miraculous intervention. The city turned to the painting during the Black Death of 1348, again during WWII and most recently during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Buona visione!
