Painted in the 14th century by an unknown artist known as the “Master of the Fogg Pietà” and located in the Harvard Museums in Cambridge, MA, the “Lamentation” was most likely part of the predella of a larger altarpiece. The emotionally charged panel depicts a rather stiff figure of Christ whose body has just been removed from the cross and placed on the lap of his mother, who is clearly overwhelmed by grief and assisted by two women. Mary Magdalene caresses the foot of Christ while St. John the Apostle mourns over his head. Bookending the group are Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Buona visita!
