“La Vecchia” by Giorgione
Painted by Giorgione around 1506, “La Vecchia” (“the Old Lady”) is in the Accademia Gallery in Venice, Italy. While at first glance the painting may appear to be a portrait, the low socioeconomic appearance of the subject would preclude the possibility of her portrait being painted by an artist of the esteem of Giorgione. The painting is more likely an allegorical work demonstrating the effects of time as the figure holds a scroll with the words “Col Tempo” (“with time”). Buona visione!
