Once thought to be the only example of a medieval equestrian monument and a masterpiece by the great Sienese painter, Simone Martini, this mural is no longer considered to be either. In fact, we are not really sure what it is. Through the scholarly efforts of Michael Mallory and my dear late friend, Gordan Moran, this once iconic work which appeared on everything from ashtrays to wine labels has fallen into art historical obscurity. Buona visione!
