Painted by the greatest Renaissance artist of northern Italy, Andrea Mantegna, the “Dead Christ” was painted in the late 15th/early 16th century. It is a daring representation of the dead body of Jesus Christ lying on a stone slab in a breathtaking foreshortened perspective. Mary, Mary Magdalene and St. John mourn over the dead Christ on the left-hand side of the painting, and an anointing jar sits just to the right of Christ’s head. Buona visione!
