“Crucifixion” by Fra Angelico (Harvard Art Museums)
Located in the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, MA, Fra Angelico’s “Crucifixion” is one of the artist’s late private commissions. The moving painting shows Jesus dying on the cross with the Virgin Mary to his right and St. John the Beloved Apostle to his left. From the top of the cross springs the Tree of Life with a pelican (symbol of Christ) amongst its branches. The kneeling Dominican at the base of the cross has been identified as Cardinal Juan de Torquemada, who Fra Angelico had met while in Rome in the 1450s. Buona visione!
