Donato Montorfano’s “Crucifixion” is arguably the most overlooked painting in the world. It is located on the south wall of the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan, Italy, directly across from Leonardo da Vinci’s uber-famous “Last Supper.” The densely populated scene depicts a triple execution and, in contrast to its companion across the room, is in a fine state of conservation. Montorfano represented the best that the local Lombard school of painting had to offer, and he proudly signed and dated the work on a stone slab at the base of Christ’s cross. Buona visione!
