Located in the Chapel of San Severo in Naples, Italy, the “Veiled Christ” is one of the world’s most amazing statues. It was carved in 1753 by Giuseppe Sanmartino for the noted alchemist Raimondo di Sangro. The life-size figure of Christ is represented below a transparent sculpted veil or shroud through which you can clearly see his body, as well as the wounds suffered during his crucifixion. At the foot of the statue are the instruments of the passion – crown of thorns, nails, and a pincer. The startling special effects of the statue caused many of its contemporaries to believe it was created through alchemy. Buona visione!
