"Boy Peeling Fruit" (Caravaggio)

“Boy Peeling Fruit” is the earliest known work by the Italian Baroque genius Caravaggio. It was painted shortly after he arrived in Rome in 1592, when the artist was only 21 years old. Typical of Caravaggio’s later works, the painting shows a young boy against a dark background peeling an unknown fruit – some say pear, others a quince, while still others a bergamot. The painting clearly demonstrates Caravaggio’s ability from a very young age to produce high-quality still-life style paintings. Several versions of the painting exist, but the one in the Roberto Longhi Foundation in Florence, Italy, is generally considered to be the prime version. Buona visione!
