Permanently located in the Pinacoteca of Siena, Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s “Annunciation” is showcased in the Metropolitan Museum/National Gallery exhibition “Siena: The Rise of Painting (1300-1350)” where it stole the show. Signed and dated 1344, the painting depicts the monumental figures of the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary separated by a gilded colonnette against a gold backdrop and on a sophisticated tiled floor. Instead of depicting the moment of the angel’s greeting, Ambrogio instead show the moment when the angel explains how Mary’s virgin conception is possible. The words “Non est impossibile apud Deum omne verbum” (“nothing is impossible for God’s word”) are visible coming out of the angel’s mouth. Buona visione!
