Painted after the artist’s move to Rome in 1508, the “Alba Madonna” clearly reflects the influence of Raphael’s Roman surroundings. The Virgin Mary is dressed in antique sandals, long flowing robes, and headdress. The Christ Child is depicted in a classicizing contrapposto as he embraces the cross – and his destiny – which young St. John the Baptist offers him. All of it set against a pastoral landscape in delicate colors such as pink, green, and pale blue. Buona visione!
