"La Torre Dell' Orologio (Clock Tower)" in Piazza San Marco

Site Visited

La Torre Dell’ Orologio

La Torre Dell’ Orologio (clock tower) in Piazza San Marco, not to be confused with Campanile (bell tower) always in the square, is an incredible renaissance building attributed to the famous architect Mauro Codussi.

The decorative tower contains an astronomical clock showing not only the time and zodiac signs representing the months but the lunar phases so the sailors leaving Venice for the Orient could choose the most favorable time to set out to sea. Both the tower and the clock date from 15th century, though the mechanism of the clock was altered throughout the years to keep its precision which was so valuable to the city. The tower through the centuries went through several restorations to guarantee its function and it is said to be the first digital clock since a new system was put in 1759 changing the time every 5 minutes.
