"The Betrothed" by Alessandro Manzoni

I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) is one of the most famous and widely read Italian novels. First published in 1827, the story itself takes place in 1682 when Lombardy was under Spanish rule and addresses themes of injustice in the legal system, hypocritical priests, the unwavering strength of love, and flawed politics. The book is also notable for its use of the modern Italian language and role as the model for subsequent modern Italian novels.
