“Lovers’ Debates for the Stage” presents thirty-one “amorosi contrasti”- or theatrical lovers’ debates – written by acclaimed Italian actress and author Isabella Andreini (1562-1604). Isabella Andreini, a member of the touring theater company Compagnia dei Comici Gelosi, was famous for her role as the “inamorata” or female romantic lead of the “commedia dell’arte.” Andreini’s lovers’ dialogues for the stage present a fantastic sample of the witty banter exchanged between commedia dell’arte actors of the 16th-century.
