"Giorgione's Ambiguity" by Tom Nichols

Giorgione’s alluringly enigmatic works have puzzled art historians for centuries. The Venetian master’s paintings seem almost impossible to interpret – the subjects remain unidentified, the backgrounds hazy, and the narratives obscure. However, as Tom Nichols argues in “Giorgione’s Ambiguity” it is this very mysteriousness that is most fundamental to understanding Giorgione’s oeuvre. Giorgione’s works reflect not only his unique approach to the art process, but also his response to the intellectual concerns of the Renaissance.
