Carolina Mangone presents a comprehensive study of Michelangelo’s influence on famed Baroque sculptor Bernini (1598–1680) in “Bernini’s Michelangelo.” Mangone explores Bernini’s conscious borrowing of Michelangelo’s oeuvre and artistic principles, a practice which earned Bernini the title “the Michelangelo of his age.” Through an in-depth analysis of Bernini’s works, Mangone explains the variety of ways in which Bernini interacted with his pioneering Renaissance forebear – seeking at times to imitate, at times to challenge, and at times to outdo.
