In 1649, the painter Artemisia Gentileschi told her Sicilian patron Don Antonio Ruffo: “I will show your Illustrious Lordship what a woman can do.” Renaissance women’s work as artists and patrons has been overshadowed by more famous men such as Michelangelo and the Medici. In this talk we’ll examine Artemisia’s work and life, and her predecessors Sister Plautilla Nelli; a nun who painted despite being confined to a convent, and Properzia de’ Rossi; a sculptor who was the only woman artist Giorgio Vasari gave a full biography to in his The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects. We’ll learn about how they and other female artists broke the rules of what society expected from them and showed men what women could do.
Dr Meghan Callahan has lived and worked in London since 2006. Like Rocky, she earned her Master’s degree in Art History from Syracuse University as a Florence Fellow. She has a Ph.D in Art History from Rutgers University. Meghan is the Assistant Director for Teaching and Learning at Syracuse University London, where she has taught art history and history classes on Italian Art in London and the UK; Women and Art: London and UK; and Underground London.
She worked on the reinstallation of the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and then then with the sculpture dealer Patricia Wengraf. Meghan has published various articles and essays on the architectural patronage of the sixteenth century mystic nun Sister Domenica da Paradiso, miraculous paintings in Renaissance Florence, and Italian Renaissance and Baroque sculpture.

Join Chef Matteo in this live cooking class directly from his cucina (kitchen) in Florence, Italy. In this exclusive webinar, Chef Matteo will revisit and reinvent a staple dish of Italian cuisine – as only he can do – with two of his signature recipes – Risotto alla pescatora (seafood risotto) and a vegetarian Risotto alle verdure (vegetable risotto). Recipes will be provided in advance of live cooking class event.
World-renowned chef Matteo Boglione was born in Italy. In 2010, he opened the critically acclaimed restaurant in New York City called “Il Matto.” In 2013, Matteo became the Executive Chef at Le Cirque in New York City, and then later at Le Cirque Signature in Mumbai and Bangalore. He later returned to his hometown of Florence, Italy, where he most recently began a collaboration with the celebrity poet-butcher Dario Cecchini.

In this exclusive webinar, Dr. Fabrizio Nevola presents a number of illustrated vignettes of street life in the Renaissance city that inform his award-winning Hidden Florence app’s many stories – from pub brawls to football games, charitable gift-giving to elite patronage. In so doing he shows how material traces of the past still visible – but often overlooked – in the present day city fabric, offer clues to how people lived in the past in this remarkable city. Dr. Fabrizio is author of Street Life in Renaissance Italy (Yale University Press, 2020), and this work underpins the content of the app.
Prof. Fabrizio Nevola is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at the University of Exeter. He specializes on the urban and architectural history of Early Modern cities, with a particular focus on public space and the Italian peninsula. Recent work has involved significant elements of digital humanities approaches, also applied to public engagement: try out the Apps, Hidden Florence and Hidden Florence 3D (App Store and Google Play). He is the author of the prize-winning Siena: Constructing the Renaissance City (Yale University Press, 2007) and Street Life in Renaissance Italy (Yale University Press, 2020).
