POP-UP WEBINAR | “Michelangelo’s “Secret” Drawings”
Presented by Dr. Rocky Ruggiero
In 1975, a “secret” room was discovered below Michelangelo’s New Sacristy at San Lorenzo in Florence, Italy. After cleaning the walls, dozens of drawings came to light and the then director of the Medici Chapels attributed them to Michelangelo. His theory was that they were executed by Michelangelo in 1530 while he was hiding from the Medici for having actively fought against their return to Florence. While not all art historians agree with the attribution of the drawings, their association with Michelangelo has made them renowned. Yet the 30m2 (322ft2) room was off-limits to the public. That is, until now. On November 15, 2023, the “secret” room and its drawings will be accessible to 100 visitors per week by reservation for only 15-minutes at a time.
Join Dr. Rocky for this pop-up webinar where he will analyze the controversial drawings, discuss the history of their rediscovery and attribution to the great Michelangelo, and weigh in on whether all the current media attention is warranted.
The event will include a 45-minute lecture followed by 15-minutes of Q&A.
