EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Bringing Rome Home: The British and The Grand Tour”
Presented by Dr. Meghan Callahan
In the 18th and 19th centuries, British artists and architects travelled to Europe on The Grand Tour, considered a vital part of their education. Their ultimate destination was Italy, where they explored the ruins of Rome, encountered the Florentine Renaissance, and wandered around the ancient Greek temples of Southern Italy. In this talk we’ll explore how men like the Adam brothers and Sir John Soane returned to Britain with their sketchbooks filled and ready to rebuild their cities in the Neo-Classical style.
EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi: Love, War, and the Making of Italy”
Presented by Dr. Nicholas Albanese
Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro de Silva – better known as Anita Garibaldi – has been commemorated as one of the most well-known heroines of the Italian Risorgimento. Her story is indelibly tied to that of her husband, the Italian patriot, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who she met and fought at his side during his exile in South America. Theirs is a story of passion: for freedom, for revolution, and for each other. In this presentation, I will talk about Anita’s life and role as a revolutionary in one of the most famous and romanticized love stories of the modern age.
EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “The Witch-hunt: Politics, Religion and Folklore in Renaissance Europe“
Presented by Dr. Matteo Duni
The witch, an enduring presence in current pop culture, is imagined alternatively as a scary, horror movie-like creature with supernatural powers or as a harmless, actually benevolent and even funny presence, that dispenses good humor as well as magical recipes. The complex history of this figure shows that such caricatural traits, far from being just the product of present fads, are linked to specific events and social phenomena. Dr. Duni’s presntation will first trace the past of the witch back to some of the most disturbing pages of European history, such as the first mass-persecutions of the Jews and of other medieval outgroups depicted by authorities as the devil’s minions. Then it will reconstruct the other side of the witch, its folkloric dimension and its multiple functions in the local communities, also by drawing on the contemporary imagery of the witch as created by both artists and Catholic theologians and inquisitors of the Renaissance era.
EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Singing to a Different Tune – Donatello’s and Luca della Robbia’s Cantorie”
Presented by Dr. Rocky Ruggiero
The massive marble choir lofts carved by Donatello and Luca della Robbia for Florence Cathedral are an explosion of music, dance, movement, freedom, youth, and joy. While Donatello’s is covered in shimmering mosaics, multi-colored enamels, and various stones, Della Robbia’s Cantoria is a visual illustration of the musical Psalm 150 and is set within a rigorous Classical architectural frame. Join Dr. Rocky as he unpacks and analyzes these two majestic musical masterpieces.
