EXCLUSIVE WEBINAR | “Connoisseurship, Criticism and Collecting in the Gilded Age: Remembering Bernard Berenson”
Presented by Dr. Meghan Callahan
with Additional Commentary by Dr. Rocky Ruggiero
In the 18th and 19th centuries, British artists and architects travelled to Europe on The Grand Tour, considered a vital part of their education. Their ultimate destination was Italy, where they explored the ruins of Rome, encountered the Florentine Renaissance, and wandered around the ancient Greek temples of Southern Italy. In this talk we’ll explore how men like the Adam brothers and Sir John Soane returned to Britain with their sketchbooks filled and ready to rebuild their cities in the Neo-Classical style.
The webinar will include a 45-minute lecture followed by 15-minutes of Q&A.
