Teaching meets storytelling meets time travel! Our “storytelling” presentations will use beautiful images to animate history and bring it to life!

WEEK 4

THE LATE RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE WORLD | July 26-30, 2021

Monday, July 26, 2021: THE CITY ON THE SEA – ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN VENICE

Session 1: There has never been another city in the world like Venice – well maybe with the exception of Atlantis. It is literally built out in the middle of the water and its streets are filled with water; and instead of cars they have boats called gondolas. Learn why this city was built in the first place and then how it produced some of the most beautiful art of all time!

Activity: Mask making

Session 2: Dueling masks! Create weapons and Venetian masks for a thrilling competition!

Tuesday, July 27, 2021: MAKING IT WITH THE MEDICI

Session 1: The power behind the Renaissance! If it weren’t for the Medici family, the most famous artists of the Renaissance may never have made it into the spotlight. Learn why these guys were key to igniting the artistic explosion that was the Renaissance in today’s session.

Activity: Assume the role of a Medici family member

Session 2: A cabinet of curiosities – the Medici were famous for collecting all sorts of curious objects – art, exotic plants and animals, antiques, insects – today, you’ll be gathering an assortment of interesting objects and assembling your very own cabinet of curiosities!

Wednesday, July 28, 2021: MADCAP MANNERISTS

Session 1: Right around the time of Michelangelo, there were a whole bunch of wacky artists called Mannerists. They liked to paint saints with orange hair, or paint madonnas with really long necks, or add muscles to the body that didn’t exist. Today you will learn about these “madcap Mannerists” and their art and why they were so weird!

Activity: Today we’ll be creating a work of art as wacky as a mannerist painting – crazy colors, wild poses, strange expressions – bring all your weirdness!

Session 2: On guard! Get ready for an epic sword battle!

Thursday, July 29, 2021: CRAZY CARAVAGGIO – THE BAD BOY OF ART HISTORY

Session 1: Most of what we know about Caravaggio, we know from his jail records. This guy was always in trouble for one reason or another. Somehow, when he was not in jail, he found time to paint some of the most important paintings in history. Today we will learn how Caravaggio’s paintings look just like his crazy life!

Activity: See the effects of lighting using a flashlight on everyday objects

Session 2: Recreate a famous Caravaggio masterpiece using household objects!

– Friday, July 30, 2021: SO REAL THEY CAN TALK – THE SCULPTURES OF BERNINI

Session 1: Whenever I stand in front of Bernini’s statues, I have to remind people that they are made of stone. It is hard to believe it because of the amazing special effects that this artist was able to use in his sculptures. Today we will look at Bernini’s most famous statues and learn how he was able to make his statues look so real, that they look like they can talk.

Activity: Additive sculpture – making sculptures with clay, foil, or other materials

Session 2: Test your knowledge with a game of Kahoot covering the week’s lessons! Also, show and tell – we’ll have a showcase of all the amazing projects we’ve worked on over the course of the week!
