WEEK 3

THE RENAISSANCE WORLD | July 19-23, 2021

Monday, July 19, 2021: PICK THE PAINTER: WHO PAINTED WHAT IN THE BRANCACCI CHAPEL IN FLORENCE

Session 1: Two artists worked together to paint the walls of a chapel in Florence. One was older and worked in an older style, the other was only 23 years old and was a real rockstar working in a brand-new style called the Renaissance. Today, you are going to tell me which artist painted which painting in the Brancacci Chapel in Florence

Activity: Virtual Scavenger hunt and Guess the Painter

Session 2: Are you on point? Today we’ll be trying out one of the handiest technologies invented during the Renaissance – we’ll be drawing in single-point perspective.

– Tuesday, July 20, 2021: HOW AN EGG CHANGED THE WORLD – BRUNELLESCHI AND THE DOME OF FLORENCE CATHEDRAL

Session 1: When the Italian city of Florence decided to build the largest church in the world, they had one big problem – they didn’t know how to build a dome on top of it. That was until a guy with a real genius cap named Pippo Brunelleschi came along. Learn how this guy showed everyone how smart he was and how he could build such a great dome with nothing but an egg – yep, like scrambled eggs!

Activity: Egg challenge (permission required); build the dome

Session 2: An engineering challenge! Today you’ll be building your own dome inspired by the great Brunelleschi.

Wednesday, July 21, 2021: BOTTICELLI MEETS PERCY JACKSON – MYTHOLOGY IN RENAISSANCE PAINTINGS

Session 1: If you like Percy Jackson, then you will like Alessandro Botticelli. They both use gods and heroes from mythology to tell their stories – one in books and the other in paintings. Learn about some of the most famous paintings of the Renaissance and just what they mean.

Activity: Coat of Arms based on mythological elements in Botticelli’s work

Session 2: A woman with snakes for hair? Cupid’s bow and arrow? What will you include in your very own Coat of Arms inspired by Botticelli’s mythological works? Whatever you design, I’m sure Percy will be impressed!

Thursday, July 22, 2021: LOVING LEONARDO DA VINCI – THE MIND OF A GENIUS

Session 1: This guy was so smart it’s scary. We are going to get into the biggest brain of all time talking about his like, looking at his paintings and exploring his crazy inventions. And even though we’ll never know just what made this guy tick, you will walk away from this class “loving Leonardo”!

Activity: Recreate one of Leonardo’s inventions discussed in class

Session 2: Leonardo da Vinci was a lot of things – genius, artist, and brilliant inventor. Are we as smart as he was? Today we’ll be putting our minds and hands to the test – creating riddles, drawing using a technique called “sfumato” and working on our very own inventions!

Friday, July 23, 2021: BIG MIKE – MICHELANGELO’S GREATESTS HITS!

Session 1: Let’s face it, no artist has ever been as famous and popular as Michelangelo – and for good reason. He lived to be nearly 90 years old – when most people died at half that age – and made some of the most beautiful sculptures and paintings in history. Today we will count down Big Mike’s greatest hits to see why he was so famous!

Activity: Soap carving

Session 2: Test your knowledge with a game of Kahoot covering the week’s lessons! Also, show and tell – we’ll have a showcase of all the amazing projects we’ve worked on over the course of the week!
