Brunelleschi’s basilica of Santo Spirito in Florence, Italy, is one of the defining architectural works of the Renaissance. The building of this great church was a perfect historical storm – a celebrity architect, who was bordering on apotheosis as he neared the completion of the dome of Florence cathedral; a district of well-known, wealthy and competitive patrons hoping to assert themselves and their families through chapel patronage within the church; an uncertain architectural inheritance left by Brunelleschi upon his death; strong-minded and hard-willed successors of the architect at the worksite; and citywide factionalism championing and repudiating Brunelleschi’s alleged design intentions for the church. In this exclusive webinar, Dr. Rocky will untangle this web of artistic and historical factors that contributed to shaping Santo Spirito based on the findings of his recent book Brunelleschi’s Basilica: The Building of Santo Spirito in Florence.

The Florentine Renaissance conjures images of beautiful frescoes and altarpieces, of snow-white marble statues in sinewy poses and the soaring dome of Santa Maria del Fiore—the handiwork of the city’s brilliant artists and architects. But equally if not more important for the centuries to follow were Florence’s humanists: a group of writers, philosophers, manuscript hunters, teachers, scribes, librarians, notaries, priests and booksellers. These bookworms blew the dust off a thousand years of history and, in the face of historical crises and political turbulence, tried to forge a new world of patriotic public service, friendship, loyalty, wisdom, justice and refined pleasure.

After demonstrating incontrovertible evidence of the presence of both paint and binding material behind Vasari’s wall in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy in his last presentation, Maurizio Seracini, is back to discuss where we go from here in the search for Leonardo da Vinci’s lost Battle of Anghiari painting. While he showed us never-seen-before endoscopy pictures and chemical analyses last time, in his upcoming exclusive webinar, Maurizio will introduce us to new technologies and non-invasive solutions, many of which have never been used before to study art, which may prove invaluable in finding Leonardo’s lost mural. This will include the effort to create a false color image of what may lay on the original wall of the Sala Grande, hidden behind Vasari’s later remodeling, and what might just be Leonardo’s greatest painting.
