ONLINE YOUTH ART HISTORY CAMP
Art Rocky’s Way Jr.

Looking for a fun way to get your kids interested in art and history? Our virtual art history camp will have them coming back for more! Choose any number of the following week-long programs that focus on specific works of art in Italian history. From the beginning of the Renaissance all the way through to the Baroque period, Dr. Rocky and Ms. Katie will make art and history come to life! Whoever knew that learning could be so much fun!

Sessions:
– WEEK 1: 7/5/22 – 7/9/21 | The Ancient World
– WEEK 2: 7/12/21 – 7/16/21 | The Medieval World
– WEEK 3: 7/19/21 – 8/23/21 | The Renaissance World
– WEEK 4: 7/26/21 – 7/30/21 | The Late Renaissance & Baroque World

Schedule:
Monday-Friday
Morning Session: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm ET / 8:00 – 9:00 am PT
Afternoon Session: 2:00 – 3:00 pm ET/ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm PT

Virtual meetings will take place on Zoom

Format:
1-hour MORNING SESSION + 1-hour AFTERNOON SESSION. Meetings will consist of a combination of presentations and activities. The lecture will take place during the morning session; the afternoon session will be devoted to crafts, competitions, and other fun activities!

Additional screen-free optional activities will also be provided.

Certificates of Completion will be provided to all campers at the end of the week.

This is not your ordinary distance learning! Each day our campers will follow me on a journey into the past to meet historical celebrities, to learn about famous paintings, sculptures and buildings, and to discover one of the coolest cultures in the world.

Teaching meets storytelling meets time travel! Our “storytelling” presentations will use beautiful images to animate history and bring it to life!

– Campers will decipher secret codes on virtual scavenger hunts, create their own artwork inspired by Italian artists, explore famous works of art, and each Friday we will have a Kahoot! game where campers can put their Jedi skills to the test!

Our campers get their medicine with a lot of sugar in it! We provide high-quality academic information in a fun and entertaining way. You’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even realize how much you are learning.

WEEK 1

THE ANCIENT WORLD | July 5-9, 2021

Monday, July 5, 2021: RAISED BY WOLVES: ROMULUS AND REMUS AND THE FOUNDING OF ROME

Session 1: Set afloat on a river by their nasty uncle Numitor, the twin boys named Romulus and Remus were discovered by a wolf who raised them as their own. Learn how one of the boys would create a city that would one day rule the world!

Activity: Test your knowledge with a game of trivia!

Session 2: Engineer, build, plan, Sims, Minecraft

Get ready for the Sims and Minecraft to meet Ancient Rome! You are the architect of a new forum in the center of Rome. Design a city square complete with temples, markets, a Coliseum, and anything else to make the best forum.


Tuesday, July 6, 2021: WHO WAS JULIUS CAESAR?

Session 1: Everybody knows his name, but do they really know who he was or why he is so important? Learn how Julius Caesar turned the city of Rome into an empire.

Activity: Work together with your team to decide if Julius Caesar’s power is threatening the Roman Republic or not!

Session 2: Calling all secret agents! Just how did Julius Caesar communicate with his allies? Learn to write your own secret codes by creating a tool just like the one Caesar used.

Extra: You’ll also prepare for your big day at the Coliseum! Come with materials to design your gladiatorial outfit!


Wednesday, July 7, 2021: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO BE A GLADIATOR?

Session 1: It sounds like the coolest job in the world. You get to fight with all sorts of crazy weapons in front of thousands of people – sort of like WWE. But there was a lot more to being a gladiator than just being a celebrity. Learn what it took to survive in the Coliseum!

Activity: Come dressed in your best Roman or Gladiator outfit and be ready for a full day of games at the Coliseum!

Session 2: An action-packed afternoon full of Gladiatorial games!


Thursday, July 8, 2021: SEARCHING FOR ST. PETER

Session 1: St. Peter was the first pope. 2,000 years ago he was executed because Christianity was illegal and his body was secretly buried. A few hundred years later a church called St. Peter’s was built on top of the “secret” tomb, and then rebuilt again 1,000 years later. But no one ever checked to see if St. Peter was really down there until recently! Learn about a real Indiana Jones story of how the body of St. Peter was rediscovered not that long ago!

Activity: Work with your team to unscramble the secret message to find St. Peter’s hidden tomb!

Session 2: Learn all about the ancient art of mosaic making with our guest speaker: a real-life mosaic craftsman!


Friday, July 9, 2021: GIANT SPARKLING JIGSAW PUZZLES IN RAVENNA

Session 1: Take shiny little pieces of colored glass that are about the size of your teeth, stick them into wet plaster, and you have a mosaic. It took millions of little pieces of glass to produce some of the most beautiful mosaics in the world in an Italian city called Ravenna. Learn how they were made and what they mean!

Activity: All that glitters is gold – create your own giant sparkling jigsaw puzzle-like the ones in Ravenna! Design your own mosaic!

Session 2: Test your knowledge with a game of Kahoot covering the week’s lessons! Also, show and tell – we’ll have a showcase of all the amazing projects we’ve worked on over the course of the week!

THE MEDIEVAL WORLD | July 12 – July 16, 2021

Monday, July 12, 2021: WHY IS THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA LEANING?

Session 1: It is the most famous tower in the world – but it’s crooked, REALLY CROOKED! As much fun as it is to take pictures that make it look like you are holding up the tower, today we are going to find out why it is leaning, and why it doesn’t fall down!!!

Activity: Build a tower and discover what makes it lean!

Session 2: Try not to tip over! Today we’ll be imitating the leaning tower of Pisa – lean over as far as you can without falling over!


Tuesday, June 13, 2021: THE LITTLE GIANT: HOW ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CHANGED THE WORLD?

Session 1: 700 years ago, a boy named Francis was born in a town in Italy called Assisi. Little did anyone know that that little boy would grow up to become a saint and change the world. Learn how St. Francis of Assisi taught people how to love nature long before anyone cared about recycling or worried about global warming!


Activity: Write a canticle inspired by St. Francis!

Session 2: Get into the creative spirit! Write a canticle inspired by one of the world’s biggest nature lovers. Also, join us for an extra special watercolor painting lesson with talented watercolorist Kimiko Shiro!


Wednesday, July 14, 2020: HOW TO BUILD THE BIGGEST CHURCH IN THE WORLD?

Session 1: When the city of Florence decided to build a new cathedral more than 700 years ago, they wanted to build the biggest church in Tuscany. What they ended up building was the largest church in world for more than 200 years. Learn how they were able to build a church that is more than a football field and a half long so long ago!

Activity: Build a medieval cathedral, but beware of the Black Death!

Session 2: The bigger the better! Can you build a church big enough to impress the people of Tuscany from 700 years ago? Find out today when you design your very own church using toothpicks and marshmallows! Also, we’ll be designing a flag and scarf in preparation for tomorrow’s Palio race!


Thursday, July 15, 2021: IT’S OFF TO THE RACES! HORSE RACING IN THE MIDDLE AGES 

Session 1: Nay, you say, horse racing isn’t that old? Oh yes, it is – learn all about the origins of horse racing, from chariot racing in ancient Rome to horse racing in the middle ages, to the heart-pounding Palio of Siena! Get ready to ride!

Activity: Travel to Siena to compete in the famous Palio horse race. Remember to dress up as your Contrada!

Session 2: And they’re off! Today you’ll be competing in the famous Palio horse race! Dress up as your contrada and get ready for some heart-stopping action! Get in the fighting spirit!


Friday, July 16, 2021: GUESS THE GUILD: RENAISSANCE STATUES AT ORSANMICHELE IN FLORENCE

Session 1: If you wanted to work in medieval Florence, you had to be a member of a guild, which were groups of men who shared the same job. There is a church in Florence where all of these guilds represented themselves with statues made by some of history’s greatest artists. Today, you are going to tell me which statue represents which guild when we play my favorite game – GUESS THE GUILD!!

Activity: Test your skills in a game of Guess the Guild followed by a Kahoot competition!

Session 2: We have a special guest today! Learn all about the disastrous medieval plague with our favorite plague doctor, the one and only Dr. Schnabel! Also, show and tell – we’ll have a showcase of all the amazing projects we’ve worked on over the course of the week!

THE RENAISSANCE WORLD | July 19-23, 2021

Monday, July 19, 2021: PICK THE PAINTER: WHO PAINTED WHAT IN THE BRANCACCI CHAPEL IN FLORENCE

Session 1: Two artists worked together to paint the walls of a chapel in Florence. One was older and worked in an older style, the other was only 23 years old and was a real rockstar working in a brand-new style called the Renaissance. Today, you are going to tell me which artist painted which painting in the Brancacci Chapel in Florence

Activity: Virtual Scavenger hunt and Guess the Painter

Session 2: Are you on point? Today we’ll be trying out one of the handiest technologies invented during the Renaissance – we’ll be drawing in single-point perspective.


– Tuesday, July 20, 2021: HOW AN EGG CHANGED THE WORLD – BRUNELLESCHI AND THE DOME OF FLORENCE CATHEDRAL

Session 1: When the Italian city of Florence decided to build the largest church in the world, they had one big problem – they didn’t know how to build a dome on top of it. That was until a guy with a real genius cap named Pippo Brunelleschi came along. Learn how this guy showed everyone how smart he was and how he could build such a great dome with nothing but an egg – yep, like scrambled eggs!

Activity: Egg challenge (permission required); build the dome

Session 2: An engineering challenge! Today you’ll be building your own dome inspired by the great Brunelleschi.


Wednesday, July 21, 2021: BOTTICELLI MEETS PERCY JACKSON – MYTHOLOGY IN RENAISSANCE PAINTINGS

Session 1: If you like Percy Jackson, then you will like Alessandro Botticelli. They both use gods and heroes from mythology to tell their stories – one in books and the other in paintings. Learn about some of the most famous paintings of the Renaissance and just what they mean.

Activity: Coat of Arms based on mythological elements in Botticelli’s work

Session 2: A woman with snakes for hair? Cupid’s bow and arrow? What will you include in your very own Coat of Arms inspired by Botticelli’s mythological works? Whatever you design, I’m sure Percy will be impressed!


Thursday, July 22, 2021: LOVING LEONARDO DA VINCI – THE MIND OF A GENIUS

Session 1: This guy was so smart it’s scary. We are going to get into the biggest brain of all time talking about his like, looking at his paintings and exploring his crazy inventions. And even though we’ll never know just what made this guy tick, you will walk away from this class “loving Leonardo”!

Activity: Recreate one of Leonardo’s inventions discussed in class

Session 2: Leonardo da Vinci was a lot of things – genius, artist, and brilliant inventor. Are we as smart as he was? Today we’ll be putting our minds and hands to the test – creating riddles, drawing using a technique called “sfumato” and working on our very own inventions!


Friday, July 23, 2021: BIG MIKE – MICHELANGELO’S GREATESTS HITS!

Session 1: Let’s face it, no artist has ever been as famous and popular as Michelangelo – and for good reason. He lived to be nearly 90 years old – when most people died at half that age – and made some of the most beautiful sculptures and paintings in history. Today we will count down Big Mike’s greatest hits to see why he was so famous!

Activity: Soap carving

Session 2: Test your knowledge with a game of Kahoot covering the week’s lessons! Also, show and tell – we’ll have a showcase of all the amazing projects we’ve worked on over the course of the week!

THE LATE RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE WORLD | July 26-30, 2021

Monday, July 26, 2021: THE CITY ON THE SEA – ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN VENICE

Session 1: There has never been another city in the world like Venice – well maybe with the exception of Atlantis. It is literally built out in the middle of the water and its streets are filled with water; and instead of cars they have boats called gondolas. Learn why this city was built in the first place and then how it produced some of the most beautiful art of all time!

Activity: Mask making

Session 2: Dueling masks! Create weapons and Venetian masks for a thrilling competition!


Tuesday, July 27, 2021: MAKING IT WITH THE MEDICI

Session 1: The power behind the Renaissance! If it weren’t for the Medici family, the most famous artists of the Renaissance may never have made it into the spotlight. Learn why these guys were key to igniting the artistic explosion that was the Renaissance in today’s session.

Activity: Assume the role of a Medici family member 

Session 2: A cabinet of curiosities – the Medici were famous for collecting all sorts of curious objects – art, exotic plants and animals, antiques, insects – today, you’ll be gathering an assortment of interesting objects and assembling your very own cabinet of curiosities!


Wednesday, July 28, 2021: MADCAP MANNERISTS

Session 1: Right around the time of Michelangelo, there were a whole bunch of wacky artists called Mannerists. They liked to paint saints with orange hair, or paint madonnas with really long necks, or add muscles to the body that didn’t exist. Today you will learn about these “madcap Mannerists” and their art and why they were so weird!

Activity: Today we’ll be creating a work of art as wacky as a mannerist painting – crazy colors, wild poses, strange expressions – bring all your weirdness!

Session 2: On guard! Get ready for an epic sword battle!


Thursday, July 29, 2021: CRAZY CARAVAGGIO – THE BAD BOY OF ART HISTORY

Session 1: Most of what we know about Caravaggio, we know from his jail records. This guy was always in trouble for one reason or another. Somehow, when he was not in jail, he found time to paint some of the most important paintings in history. Today we will learn how Caravaggio’s paintings look just like his crazy life!

Activity: See the effects of lighting using a flashlight on everyday objects 

Session 2: Recreate a famous Caravaggio masterpiece using household objects!


– Friday, July 30, 2021: SO REAL THEY CAN TALK – THE SCULPTURES OF BERNINI

Session 1: Whenever I stand in front of Bernini’s statues, I have to remind people that they are made of stone. It is hard to believe it because of the amazing special effects that this artist was able to use in his sculptures. Today we will look at Bernini’s most famous statues and learn how he was able to make his statues look so real, that they look like they can talk.

Activity: Additive sculpture – making sculptures with clay, foil, or other materials
